Alone by OperationDropkick Alone by OperationDropkick
I took this image whilst sat on the kerb at the side of a street. I was actually waiting for the flower parade to start at Spalding Flower Festival and the street was absolutely packed, hundreds of pedestrians standing around, walking up and down, buses driving up and down the street, emergency vehicles parked up at the side and driving up and down.
Whilst I was sat on the kerb waiting for the parade to start, I'd been fascinated by this man, who had positioned himself at the side of the road in his little fold-out chair. The position he'd decided to sit down in was fantastic, as the conifers provided a really great backdrop, and he'd chosen one of the only places where there were no interruptions - people, cars, buses, etc. - so I managed to get this shot which, despite the huge amounts of activity at the sides and behind the cameras frame, make the man look completely alone, and I think that is what has made the image look so good.
I'm very proud of capturing this image and making it have a sort of false effect because of how he looks alone but is actually very far from it.

Comments and critique please! :)

Hmmm I love the quality of this old man you have captured, He seems so alone, and probably is despite what is going on outside of the frame... For old people loose their friends and family before their eyes as time passes.... So I think you really got a moment here.... despite other comments on too much floor.... I think that there is the right amount of floor to capture the sense of space.....

Thanks so much for the great comment :)
And all of the comments about too much floor were posted before I cropped the image, when it did have too much floor.
Thanks again :)

Really?
I was basing it on the law of the thirds with a third of the floor and two thirds of the trees. I didn't think there was too much.

Thanks so much for the comment :)

i like how, if you look quickly, you won't even see the man, but a look harder at the photo reveals its true nature :)

The only thing I'd say is about the composition but then I looked harder and realised that's the media student in me talking, and it honestly looks great.

There just seemed to be a lot of floor but then I decided it wasn't me that had a problem with that, I'd been taught to find a problem with it from making films.
